Made for a Purpose

by Jason Barton

My boys and I love to ride bikes. It is one of our favorite things to do together, although Jonah, my youngest, has a harder time than his older brother, Jake. He’s just beginning to get the hang of it.

Do you like to ride bikes? Let’s pretend for just a minute that your bike has feelings. If you never ride your bike and it just sits in the corner of your garage, do you think it might wonder what it is made for?

Your bike might be happy but feel as though there was something missing.

Then one day you go into your garage, put on your helmet and climb onto your bike. You begin to pedal. All of a sudden the bike feels alive! Its wheels are spinning. It has never felt this way before. It knows now that this is what it was made for—to be ridden.

Did you know that just like your bike, you were created for a purpose? Here are two things that are true about you:

1. You were created by God. Long before you were born, God thought about you and planned for your life. He planned what you would look like, what color your hair would be and even who would get to be your parents.

God knows everything about you. Psalm 139:13 says: “You created the deepest parts of my being. You put me together inside my mother’s body.” Isn’t it cool to know that you were made special by God? He loves you so much and made you for His purpose.

2. You were created to know God. Just like the bicycle knew something was missing, people are born with a similar feeling. The missing thing in a human’s life is a relationship with God.

God made you to know Him really well. He wants to be your very best friend. We can never know what we are made for until we know the One who made us!

Knowing God is the greatest gift we could ever be given. John 3:16 says: “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life.”

Only through God’s Son, Jesus, can you have a relationship with Him. When you believe in Jesus and trust Him with your life, you are fulfilling your purpose.

Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Is He your best friend? I sure hope so! God has big plans for your life and can show you those plans if you know Him.

You were created by God and for a purpose. Trust Jesus with your life and, just like the bike, you can discover what you were made for.
