Listen to a Shofar

by Janna Jones

In the Bible, a ram’s horn was special to the people of Israel. They used the curved horn of a male sheep or goat—called a shofar—to make music, sound an alarm and signal victory.

Remember when the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho? They blew their horns right before the walls came tumbling down (Joshua 6:20). Gideon had his fighting men blow horns to win an important battle (Judges 7:16-22). Priests also carried special oils in horns that were used to anoint the kings of Israel.
