Super Salt Experiment

plastic bowls
pan with sides
liquid watercolors
spoon or eyedropper


1. Fill bowls of various sizes with water. Freeze.
2. Dip each bowl into warm water to loosen the ice.
3. Place the ice domes upside-down in a pan with sides.
4. Lightly sprinkle salt over the ice and watch as the ice begins to melt.
5. Use a spoon or eyedropper to drip watercolors onto the ice.
6. See how the colors show the tunnels that the salt creates in the ice!

How It Works

Salt causes ice to melt at much cooler temperatures than normal. So wherever salt touches your ice dome, it melts the ice, sinks into it and creates cool tunnels and patterns.
